I have to say I have little faith in the ‘Go forth and research’ approach to supervising. Allowing a graduate student to wander around aimlessly in the depths of research is just stupid. You end up getting shit on your desk. I know this because that’s how I was treated and I’ve handed in plenty of shit because I had no idea what I was doing. And I’ve seen plenty of graduate shit presented.
